In the first of this series of mastering different styles of light, we will be looking at the style that I use for pretty much all of my work., hard light. The workshop will be delivered as a Digital download around a week before the live call (full details at the bottom) and it will be a mixture of theory and behind the scenes practical work with tasks for you to try out yourself. This workshop will be focusing on still life, so food, drink and product as the subject and a lot of it wont be directly applicable to portrait work.

  • When to use hard light
  • Coping with blown out highlights
  • Coping with reflections from hard light
  • Getting the right exposure in a scene with subjects that reflect different amounts of light
  • Manipulating hard light
  • Modifier choices for hard light and when to use certain tools
  • Composition with hard light
  • Choosing subjects that suit hard light
  • Creating sharp shadows whilst keeping even light throughout a scene
  • A deep dive into the current trends of hard light
  • Colour grading images shot with hard light
